In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins and they have different functions but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. But i am afraid I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. The good thing is that they are very cheap and readily available, especially when you're looking at a Bosch sensor, which is what ours are. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a number of problems within your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your audi q7 key since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine of the car is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these two points. This is the same across the audi connect key 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find them in wrecking yards.
