How to Replace an audi lost key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are various pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles.
