Buying a Double Buggy From Birth

There are a lot of factors to consider when selecting the perfect double buggy from the time of birth. We spoke with Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options, age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.

A must-have investment for families with active children This buggy can grow with your family from twins to toddlers. It's lightweight with great maneuverability and can maneuver through uneven terrain with ease.

What kind of buggy do you want?

A double buggy is ideal for transporting two children, not necessarily of the same age, side-by-side. They can also be used as prams. Each seat has an adjustable mechanism that allows your children can sit or lie down in different positions. A lot of them have plenty of storage space for everything from drinks and snacks to wipes and nappies. They're usually lightweight they fold easily and are small enough to fit in the car boot. If you're a frequent driver, it's worth checking the buggy's maneuverability with the wheels folded and to take in and out of your car boot.

The most popular type of double buggy is the side-by-side that you've probably seen on other mothers' pushchairs or even rode in as a child. They are perfect for older siblings or twins who want to keep up with you. They are also available in various seating configurations such as 'cinema seats'. They're usually pretty easy to drive and, if you opt for a model that has soft suspension, make light work of the kerbs.

Tandem buggies are also a popular choice as they're typically more maneuverable than a side-by-side. This is because the second seat is placed behind the first one, instead of over it. They're generally bigger than a side-byside and can be a bit bulky when folded, so it's important to check they'll fit through doors and public transport. They can be used to transport twins, a toddler and an infant or three children, with the addition of an additional buggy board.

Lastly there are the'single-to-double' convertibles which can be used as a single pushchair from birth then convert to a best double buggy by attaching a second seat, carrycot or car seat to their clever frame. They're more expensive than tandem buggies or side-byside buggies, but they offer plenty of flexibility and come with a premium resale price. They're generally easy to steer, come with large storage bins and can cope well on uneven surfaces. Some models even come with a built-in ride-on board and cinema seating for your child's older.

Do you have twins?

Double buggys are the ideal method to transport your children, whether they are twins or older siblings. There are two types of double buggies: tandem buggies, where one child is seated above the other, and side by side buggies. Both buggies can be fitted with two seats fixed. However side-by-side buggies tend to be narrower to be able to pass through doors. Tandems tend to be larger in general. They can also accommodate a carrycot and toddler seat.

Do you have a child?

Being a parent to a child can feel like quite a big responsibility initially, particularly when you have to tend to the baby. They might also feel left out if they are placed in an infant carrier while you push the older one along and so having a double buggy right from the beginning can make things easier. It can also help your child get into their new role of a 'big sister or brother'.

The side-by-side double buggies could be a great option for twins, as both children will share the same view. However they are heavy and heavy. Do you require a traveling system?
